Alex Landenburg

U.K. / Germany /

Born and raised in Saarland, South-West Germany, Alex picked up the sticks from an early age and since then his medium of expression has taken him to work with quite a number of acclaimed musicians of the metal and rock scene.
With a broad and diverse musical taste, a basically all-round drummer -beating his way up through the metal scene.

Alex’s first major step into the spotlight took place at the age of 26 when JEFF WATERS asked him to join one of Canada’s most important Metal acts ever – ANNIHILATOR. Alex toured Europe and the U.K. with the band, supporting the record “Metal” -which had been recorded by none other than the drum legend MIKE MANGINI.

It was only shortly after, when Alex was asked to replace yet another drum legend. ULI KUSCH (Helloween, Masterplan) himself, asked Alex to replace him in the legendary progressive metal band MEKONG DELTA, the brainchild of composer and bass virtuoso Ralf Hubert. Since then, Alex has been working extensively with the band, releasing three records (”Wanderer On The Edge Of Time (2010), ”Intersections” (2012) and ”In A Mirror Darkly” (2014)), as well as touring, playing to fans in Greece, Turkey, Russia, Norway and Denmark to name a few.

In late 2008, melodic rock greats AXXIS -one of Germany’s biggest acts of the early nineties, asked Alex to be their new drummer. Alex recorded and released with them the album “Utopia”, which made an impressive chart debut at rank 36 in Germany. Once again, Alex was touring Europe -including performances at some of the biggest festivals in the Metal and Rock scene; such as Masters of Rock etc.

Gradually Alex gained reputation as an excellent drum clinician, as well. In late 2009, he held a series of clinics for DrumCraft drums in Shanghai/China as well as at events such as the Musik Produktiv Messe in Switzerland where he had the honor to headline the drum performances alongside drum superstar Jojo Mayer. Later that year DrumCraft released a public edition of Alex’s first signature drum set, strictly limited to 50 units -it sold out within weeks after its release.
In 2010, Drumheads magazine included Alex in their special issue “Drumheroes”, which covered Germany’s 50 most influential drummers.
In 2013, Alex appeared at the Musikmesse in Frankfurt, presenting the 2BOX-DrumIt-Five electronic drums. The same year, a five-pages-long interview was gracing on Drums&Percussion magazine.

In fall of 2010, Alex was asked to play for Melodic Metal act STRATOVARIUS, stepping in for drummer Jörg Michael.
Alex embarked on the first part of the band’s mutual tour with Helloween, which -despite the sad circumstances that led to this, (Jörg had been diagnosed with cancer, from which he has luckily recovered in the meantime) was a big highlight in Alex’s career till that point.

2011 found Alex stepping in again for Uli Kusch, this time replacing him in Timo Tolkki’s (ex-Stratovarius) new “super group” SYMFONIA. Featuring a fantastic line up of highly accomplished musicians such as Jari Kainulainen (ex-Stratovarius), Mikko Härkin (ex-Sonata Arctica) and legendary vocalist Andre Matos (ex-Angra), the band made its debut performance at Finnish Metal Expo in February 2011. In March 2011, the debut album ”In Paradisum” was released and Alex toured South America with the supergroup, playing to fans in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile. The band was supposed to start recording a new album but was terminated before the end of the same year.

2012 was the year of big changes as Alex was asked to join Luca Turilli’s RHAPSODY as their new permanent drummer.
The chemistry was beyond expectation and it showed as the band was touring extensively in 2013, supporting the album
“Ascending to Infinity” playing all over Europe, in the USA and Mexico. In June 19th 2015, the band released their most outstanding record to date, ”Prometheus, Symphonia Ignis Divinus”, through Nuclear Blast. ”Prometheus…” is the first RHAPSODY album to feature Alex’s drumming and the first one, on which Luca Turilli worked closely with a drummer regarding the composition of drum parts. The album has been receiving laudatory reviews and entered the charts in Hungary (#34), Italy (#43), Germany (#70), Switzerland (#82), FRANCE (#88), Japan (#78 and #13 excl. Japanese artists).

In 2013, Alex joined forces with longtime friend and former Axxis bandmate Marco Wriedt, forming the band 21 OCTAYNE.
From catchy pop/rock songs and ballads to heavy rock: 21OCTAYNE is a true representation of musical diversity. In May 2015 the band released their debut album INTO THE OPEN through AFM records. The album received laudatory reviews and took the band on tour with UK rock legends URIAH HEEP a.o. After their critically acclaimed debut, the band is ready to step up their game with their new album “2.0”. Masterly crafted hard rock at its best for the sophisticated rock listener, packed with powerful vocals, catchy hooks and a groovy rhythm section. A must have for true rock fans – coming out September 25th 2015!

In 2012, a collaborative project between musicians from around the globe was founded under the name UNIVERSAL MIND PROJECT. UMP moves in progressive metal paths, combining features of melodic death and symphonic power metal in a modern and fresh way. The project counts great names of the metal scene such as Henrik Bath (vocals, Darkwater), Mark Jansen (growls, EPICA – MaYan), Nils K. Rue (vocals, PAGAN’S MIND), Charlie Dominici (vocals, ex- Dream Theater), Mike LePond (bass, SYMPHONY X), Emanuele Casali (keys, DGM) a.o. Alex has contributed with his drumming on 4 tracks on the project’s debut album ”THE JAGUAR PRIEST” coming out in 2015.
